This blog was started in March of 2010.  It has now been six years of postings about the lives, ancestors and families of George Angus Barclay and Amarilla Spracklin, founders of Pine River, Minnesota.

I have covered George Angus Barclay’s early years, his siblings, his life in Minnesota, his service in the Civil War and his settling in the Pine River area.  There is always more you can do in genealogical research and I still have questions but I think I have covered quite a bit on this blog.  They were truly two very colorful and complicated people.

Unfortunately, I have not yet determined if George was born in Enfield, Connecticut.  There is no birth record for him at the Enfield Courthouse.  I was actually there at the courthouse on two separate occasions searching for his birth and anything on the Barclays. I have studied George’s siblings to try to find out if they knew anything.  They all have their own version of their origins in the USA but not much about Scotland so far.

The last name of George’s mother Margaret was found on his sister Mary Jane Barclay Ford’s death certificate but it is unreadable.  I have asked many genealogists to try to help me decipher it but they have failed as well. It is something like Margaret “Davison or Davidson.”  If I could find another source it might reveal the name in a more readable manner.

George’s father,  John Barclay, was supposedly born in Edinburgh, but I am not so sure about that. We all know the great city of Edinburgh and he might have just used that city because it was known.  If he had a Scottish brogue it might have been difficult to understand his actual birth location. I have experience with a mispronunciation and spelling of a birth location in Scotland on my mother’s side. However, Edinburgh is a very big city and he could have come from some area in or around that city. What this means is I need to learn about Scottish genealogical research and I started that process with the course I took several years ago at the British Institute in Salt Lake City.

John Barclay stated that he came to the United States in 1833.  This is what he testified to in his naturalization papers that I found in Scott County, Minnesota records. So far I have not found any evidence of a John Barclay coming to the United States in that year of 1833 online. I am told by accomplished genealogists who have studied immigration that people often forget the year of their immigration.

John’s age is also in question, it changes from census to census. It is said that he was born in 1801 and died in 1897 which makes him 96 years old at his death.  His obituary notice is also vague about his origins, immigration and his first wife.

George and Alexander, brothers, indicate they were born in Connecticut but so far I have not found any birth records for the children of John and Margaret Barclay in that state and I have been to several of their archives in person on several occasions and local courthouses.  I have conducted a cemetery search in the Enfield area for Margaret but have had no luck on a burial location. It is possible that she is buried near the Bristol area based on her daughter Mary Jane’s information. So the origins of the Barclay’s are still shrouded in mystery.  We will see, and if I do find out anything I will of course share it on this blog.

Amarilla’s connection have been a little easier to find and search. I have covered Amarilla’s life in Iowa and Minnesota on this blog.  Her father Daniel D. Spracklin was born in Knox Co., Ohio and he migrated to Iowa by 1856 with his first family.  That family consisted of mother Elizabeth Keller Spracklin, and her siblings Henry, Oliver, and Mary with Amarilla following in 1858.

Because there was a lot to share I decided to divide up the story of Amarilla’s origins between Ohio and Iowa/Minnesota. So you will find the origins of the Spracklin’s on another blog titled “Solomon Goss of Fearing Twp., in Ohio.”  This blog will take you back into the history of Amarilla’s father and mother’s origins in Ohio focusing on the counties of Washington, Knox and Morrow.  It covers Daniel D. Spracklin’s family origins through his parents John A. and Lydia (Goss) Spracklin, his siblings and what happened to them.

Amarilla’s lineage goes to DAR and the Revolutionary War and to Mayflower through her grandmother Lydia Goss Spracklin. I have yet to share about that side of the family but will be doing so on the Solomon Goss blog after I complete the Spracklin’s history.

Amarilla’s also has lineage to DAR and Mayflower through her mother’s side of the family Elizabeth Keller Spracklin’s mother Mary Anne Delano Keller and her father Stephen Delano.  This lineage has been covered in the Solomon Goss blog.

I need to join DAR and Mayflower and in the next year hopefully that will go well and I will let you know the outcome.  I also might give information to other organizations in order to preserve my and our family history.

I have taken DNA tests and some family members have done so as well.  I have a PAGE at the top of this blog describing that process.  I encourage anyone who is a Barclay or a cousin to take a test and let me know so I can seek you out in the database and see how you compare with myself.  I have tested with all the major companies – Ancestry, Family Tree DNA and 23&Me.

So I come to a stopping place on this blog and will not be posting unless I have something of merit to share with you. The blog will remain online and active and I might make some changes adding material or updating and do a little maintenance on occasion so check back once in a while to see if anything new occurs.  Check the right side at the top of the blog for any updates and announcements.

This does not mean that I am finished.  I want to clean up my research binders for the Barclays and when that is to my satisfaction, I will start working on more research into the origins of the Barclays.

I will be putting my time and energy into the Solomon Goss blog and going further back into the past to cover the Goss family history. It will be a great challenge and will take a great deal of care.  It will be harder because the further back you go the harder the research gets.

Daniel Spracklin’s Children: Charles Edward Spracklin Settles in Minnesota 1874-1946

Charles Edward Spracklin

Charles Edward Spracklin was a son of Daniel and Sarah Spracklin.  He was born the 19th of September, 1874 in Benton Co., Iowa according to my records; however, his Death Certificate gives 1873 as his birth year.

Charles Edward or Ed as I think he was called, lived in Benton County, Iowa with his parents and migrated with them to Iowa County, Iowa.  He remained with his parents up to about 1905. He is featured the 1885 1895, 1905 Iowa State Census which I have shared on this blog in posts about his father Daniel.  He was also in the  1900 U.S. Federal Census.

By 1910 he migrated up to Pine River, Cass Co., Minnesota although his obituary says he came there in 1915. He concentrated on the townships west of Pine River in the lower part of the county.

He married Arminda Victoria Ward about 1915 probably in Minnesota. I do not know her father’s name but her mother was Martha Ellen Walker.  There is an Arminda V. Ward living with a Jonas O. Welker and Edward C. in Bungo Twp., Cass Co., Minnesota in 1910.  She is listed as his niece and age 26. She was born in Minnesota and her parents were born in Ohio. Jonas’ parents were born in Ohio and New Hampshire. He is a farmer on a general farm.  I could not find her in the 1900 U.S. Census but I did find her in the 1905 Minnesota State Census as Armenda V. Ward, age 21, census date June 26, 1905, Cass County, Bungo, Minnesota, born about 1884 and above her is listed an Ora J. Welker and Edwin C. Welker.

Arminda was the author of the Spracklin Family Outline featured on the Solomon Goss Blog dated August 5, 2011 titled: Ancestor Outline by Armindo Spracklin.  You will see that she has different vital dates for some of the children of Daniel and Sarah, but that is not unusual in genealogy.  I will make a page for this Outline that she created and publish it at the top of this blog, it is very special source given to me by my Aunt Miriam.

In 1917 he is involved with the deed partitioning the land of his father Daniel Spracklin and he shares this deed with his sister Amarilla and his wife Arminda.  I will present more information in a later post on these partition deeds.

Charles Edward Spracklin registered for the Draft in 1918. We see that Charles writes he was born in 1875, so his birth year keeps changing.

On 10 April 1919 Charles Edward Spracklin obtained a patent for land in Minnesota.

In 1928 Charles or Edward “Ed” was in the local news.  I was trying to find out more about Charles Edward because it is rumored his brother Peter came to Minnesota and other events took place but I was unable to find any other news.

Ed Spracklin’s team indulged in a short runaway Tuesday but before they got fully underway became entangled in a road drag and stopped after the tongue of the wagon had been broken. The wagon was loaded with two Jersey cows so it was fortunate that the road drag interfered. The team became frightened at a passing train. They had two children:

1.  Ines Amirilla Spracklin born 31 July, 1917 and died 28, November, 1936.  She married a Henry Klinert and they had one child Charles Henry Klinert, born 8 November 1936.   I am happy to say that Charles married in 1959 in Montana and he died in San Diego, California. Find A Grave has a memorial to him and his wife at the Miramar National Cemetery there. Henry, the father,  was living in Bull Moose Twp., in the 1940 Census listed alone and as a widow. There is a Henry Klinert who died in 1989 in Crow Wing, Minnesota but I don’t know if it him at this time. I think Ines would be proud to know her son Charles was a highly decorated serviceman.  Ines Spracklin Klinert is buried near her father in the Bethlehelm Cemetery in McKinley Twp., Cass Co., Minnesota. Find A Grave has a memorial for her.

2.  George David Spracklin born 5 August, 1921 and died 4 June, 1993 in Miles City, Custer Co., Montana. He married first to Mary Josie Kastanck and had four children: David Edward, Clifford Joe, Elise Inez, Suzzy Mabel. He then remarried to a Marla Jean Fleming in Miles City, Montana and had one daughter.  After 1946, George took his mother to Montana after the death of his father Charles Edward because she wanted to be buried in the mountains as the story goes. George died in Miles City, Montana on 4 June, 1993 and is buried in the Custer County Cemetery.  He doesn’t have a tombstone but instead, he has a metal tag on his gravesite. I have placed a memorial at Find A Grave for him.

Charles Edward Spracklin passed away on 10 September 1946:

002190 #Death Cert. or 2490? Died in Deerfield Twp., Cass Co., Minnesota, usually resides in the same place. Was in that community 5 years. Male, white, married to Arminda who was 63 yrs old. Date of Birth for Charles was Sept. 19, 1873, age 72 yrs, 11 mos, 21 days. Occupation farmer born in Benton Co., Iowa. Father Daniel Dare Spracklin born in Ohio, mother Sarah Blackier born in Ohio. Informant was George Spracklin of Backus, Minnesota. Charles was buried at McKinley Twp. on 9/16/1946. Northland Funeral Home handled the arrangements, located in Pine River, Mn. Signed by Annie Compton on 9/19/1941, Local Registrar. He died on Sept. 19, 1946 of chronic myocarditis over 8 months. D.E. Gyres, M.D. ? of Pegquote Falls, 9/11/1946.

Cass Co. Pioneer of 34 years is buried at Backus:  

Funeral services were held in Backus for Charles Edward Spracklin, 72 years of age, who passed away September 10th at his home in Deerfield Township. Services were held at the Backus Congregional Church with Reverend Glen Erickson officiating. Music and singing were furnished by Mrs. Erikson and Donna Culter. Pallbearers included Bill Backs, John Cunningham, Harold Roger, Ernie White, James Bishop and Melvin Ray.

Internment in the Backus cemetery. A resident of Cass County for 34 years Mr. Spracklin was well known and highly respected and his many friends were saddened by the news of his death. Charles Edward Spracklin born September 19, 1874, at Benton, Iowa, and passed away September 10, 1946 at his home in Deerfield Township, Cass County, Minnesota.

He had 15 brothers and five sisters, 18 of whom preceded him in death. At 18 months of age he moved with his parents to Deep River, Iowa. When he was 18 he migrated to western North Dakota and eastern Montana for a short time, then returned to Deep River, Iowa, by way of Shenandoah, Nebraska. In 1912 he came to Pine River, in 1919 he moved to Backus, where he resided until his death. During that time he made three trips to the Dakota harvest field and two to Iowa for corn picking. In 1915 he was united in marriage to Minn Armenda Ward, of Pine River. This union, a son and daughter were born. His daughter preceded him in death 10 years ago. He had been ill for some time. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife and son, George, and four grandchildren, all of Backus. Also 41 nieces and nephews, and many great, and great great nieces and nephews. The out-of-town guests at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. George Gilchrist and their two sons, Alvin and Delmer of Sobway, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Vanderhoff of Nisswa, and Lewis Gilchrist, also of Sobway.

Note:  15 brothers and five sisters is a little much and I am not sure why these number were given in the obituary.  Again the year of his birth changes.

Charles Edward Spracklin is buried in the Bethlehem Cemetery in McKinley Twp., Cass County, Minnesota. Find A Grave has the cemetery listed in Pine River but is it pretty far from the town. I visited his grave in 2007 when I returned for the 3rd time to Pine River on a genealogical research trip.  It took a bit of driving on country roads next to corn fields and going straight west into the sun from Pine River and then north to find the cemetery.  Charles did not have a stone but he did have a small metal stake.  I have added a memorial for him at Find A Grave.

Arminda wanted to be buried in the mountains so she moved to Bozeman, Montana after Ed’s death. I visited Arminda’s grave site in the Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman,  I tried to locate a tombstone but there wasn’t one at the site. The following is a picture of me standing approximately where her grave is located in this cemetery.  I wanted to pay my respects to her for writing the Spracklin Pedigree outline.

So it turns out that there were several Spracklins that migrated and lived in Minnesota.

The Children of Virda H. and Lillie Spracklin…

Virda H. Spracklin was the son of Daniel and Sarah Spracklin.  In the last post I wrote about Virda and Lillie Spracklin and their life.  In this post I am sharing what I know of their children:

1.  Joella Edith Spracklin was born 25 May, 1887 and died 7 March, 1890 in Calhoun Co., Iowa. She is buried in the Cedar Township Cemetery in Calhoun Co., Iowa. This cemetery is near Rinard.

Note:  Find A Grave has a picture of the tombstone and it seems to verify the dates.  My Legacy date calculator, and using the age given, says that she was born in 1887.

2. Daniel Dair Spracklin was born 14 September, 1890 in Calhoun Co., Iowa. He died 3 November, 1975 in South Dakota.  He married Minnie May Schlund on 11 March, 1914 in Sanborn, South Dakota.

Sadly Minnie died on 7 October, 1929 in Sanborn Co., per the South Dakota Death Index.

In 1930 Daniel is living on his own as a lodger with a Burt Swenson. It is interesting that it does not give a first name.

It looks like Daniel did not have any children with either wife.

Find A Grave has a picture of his tombstone that includes his two wives. It is in the Eventide Cemetery in Woonsocket, South Dakota.

3. Lola Isabelle Spracklin was born 29 December, 1892 in Calhoun Co., Iowa and died 29 December, 1975. She married Guy Randerson on 22 December, 1915 in Woonsocket, South Dakota. They had four children: Ruby M., Orval A., Opal A. and Fay A.

4.  Mabel Sarah Spracklin was born 16 September, 1895 in Somers, Calhoun Co., Iowa. She married Peter Henry Lund 4 July, 1914 in Sanborn, Jerauld Co., South Dakota. They had one child.

Something happened to the marriage to Henry for in the 1930 U.S. Census Mabel is now Mabel Frye with a daughter named Fern Lund.  They have migrated to Nebraska.

5. Solomon (Saul) McKinley Spracklin born 7 January, 1898 in Somers, Calhoun Co., Iowa and died 20 August, 1974 in Omaha, Nebraska.  He married Helen Bronson on 11 March, 1919 in Jerauld, South Dakota. They had seven children.

Saul was refusing to be found in the 1920 census so I moved ahead to the 1930 and found him with Helen in Omaha, Nebraska.

Saul and Helen are in the 1940 Census in West Benson, Douglas, Nebraska with their family.

In searching for the burial for Saul, I stumbled on newspaper articles about his death.  He was killed in a parking lot in Omaha by some young kids in July 1974 and died on 20 August 1974 of the wounds from what I can make out. More information is available if you contact me by leaving a comment.

6. Beryl Edna Spracklin was born 4 April, 1901 in Calhoun Co., Iowa. She married Bertyl Andrew Lillehaug on 2 July, 1919 in Jerauld, So. Dakota.  Bertyl was born 24 January, 1897 in Lane, Jerauld, South Dakota. They died in Pierce County, Washington. Bertyl and Beryl had five children: Arlene B., Verda Mae, Alvin B., Bonnie R, Betty A.

Bert and Beryl Lillehaug are still in Omaha, Nebraska in the 1940 U.S. Federal Census. Bertel is working in a Planing mill as an odd jobs worker.  The family consists of Bertel 43, Beryl 39, Verda 16, Alvin 15, Bonnie 12 and Betty Ann 1-year-old. So this means they made their migration to Washington State after 1940.

Find A Grave has a memorial of their tombstone and son Alvin’s at the Haven of Rest Cemetery in Gig Harbor, Pierce Co., Washington.  There are obituaries listed on the index for Bert and Bertyl at the Tacoma Public Library which require a fee to purchase copies.

7. Howard Alfred Spracklin was born 14 September, 1903 in Lane, Jerauld Co., South Dakota and died 19 October, 1977.  He married Pauline Kruse on 9 June, 1928 in Jerald.

Alfred was attacked, according to newspaper reports, by two men who stormed into his apartment, stole from him and hurt him in October of 1974.  More information will be shared by leaving a comment and I will get in touch with you.

8.  Beulah Elsie Spracklin was born 1 May, 1906 in Lane, Jerauld Co., South Dakota. She married 27 September, 1927 to Elmer Ernest Harris. They had  five children.

In 1940 they are living in Bay Lake, Crow Wing Co., Minnesota. Elmer is 36, Beulah E. is 24 and children. Elmer is working as an operator on a farm.

Beulah Spracklin Harris was the mystery niece that attended the Pine River, Minnesota presentation of the play “Tales from the Tall Pines…” in 1985. When I visited Pine River on my three trips there, I was informed of a niece who came to this event. I finally know which of Amarilla’s nieces was involved. Sadly I did not realize that she actually had lived in Minnesota or I would have learned more.  See the next post for more about Beulah and this event in Pine River.

There is an Elmer E. Harris at Find A Grave with a memorial and tombstone photo. He was born 1904 and died July 15, 1977 in Crow Wing Co., Minnesota and is buried at the Lakewood Cemetery in Crosby. Beulah was living in Bay Lake in 1985 and that is east of Brainerd, Minnesota.  It might be her husband but so far I have no burial for her.

9.  Gerald Huston Spracklin was born 20 December, 1908 in Lane, Jerauld Co., South Dakota. He married Helen Wilson in 1930 in Moody Lake, South Dakota. They both died within months of each other in 1998.

Jerry and Helen Spraklin (note spelling) are living in Madison, Lake, South Dakota in the 1940 census with [Nihla J.) daughter.

Find A Grave has a memorial and tombstone photo for both Gerald and Helen at the Graceland Cemetery in Madison, Lake Co., South Dakota.

FamilySearch has school census for the Spracklin family in South Dakota and it looks like most of the children attended either in Alpena or Woonsocket from 1911 to …South Dakota School Records 1879-19700.  They have the actual census pages which could me of value to a descendant.

There is more to do and share about this family. I am not up on Nebraska or for that matter South Dakota genealogy but I do wish to caution you about the names of the locations and to verify them.  As always please check the other information found above and make sure it is correct.  I am more familiar and knowledgeable about Iowa, Washington State and Minnesota genealogy.

Alexander Barclay’s Estate and Final Settlement, A Summary!

Alexander Barclay died on 9 December, 1905 in Olmsted Co., Minnesota and his body was laid to rest in Farmington at the Corinthian Cemetery in Dakota County. Alexander’s tombstone is featured at Find A Grave.

A Summary of Alexander’s Estate

Alexander Barclay’s probate took from December 1906 to April of 1907.

My grandmother Grace A. McDonald petitioned the court to start the process of the probate but she was unable to continue because she was pregnant at the time. A Dr. Rogers was assigned to be administrator of Alexander’s estate process. There was no will so the estate had to be probated.  I refer you to the 2nd post in the list above for a review.

Here is a brief listing of the process in Alexander Barclay’s probate process:

1.  Petition for Administration of the estate and submitting of the heirs-at-law document.

2.  Setting of a Bond and granting of Administration to H.N. Rogers.

3.  Warrant to Appraisers and oath of the Appraisers.

4. Taking Inventory of the Estate which includes the personal possessions, land and other financials like stocks.

5.  Petition for License to Sell Real Estate.

6.  Publication of announcements in the local paper for the Creditors and hearing for claims against the estate and payment of those debts.  Printer’s Affidavit.

7.  In this case, affidavits from the children of the older brother John Barclay who was believed to be deceased were obtained, along with affidavits from other family members.

8.  Distribution of the stocks and transferring title to heirs.

9.  Final accounting and Petition for Settlement of the Estate.

10.  Order discharging the Representative and releasing of the surety bond.

H. N. Rogers put an ad in the local newspaper in order to sell Alexander’s farm titled:

In the final account for Alexander Barclay’s estate eleven Receipt forms were filled out for each of the 11 heirs and signed by each one, so this means they had to be mailed, signed and returned. The siblings received approximately $548 plus 1/10 interest in the mining stocks.  Grace Barclay McDonald also received the larger sum.  For John Avery Barclay and Sarah Ellen Barclay they received about $273 plus 1/20 interest in the mining stocks.

The probate of Alexander Barclay has been extremely helpful in identifying the two families of John Barclay.  Unfortunately, it has not provided information about the origins of the Barclay family nor the mother Margaret of the first 7 children.

Studying the siblings has created more questions and an uncertainty of the actual ages of the children and their birth order.  John Barclay states he came to the United States in 1833 per his naturalization. After having studied the children of this man and learning of their viewpoints about the origins of the family, I think that a new approach is in order in searching for John Barclay’s origins.

This brings to a close the postings on Alexander Barclay’s estate. It is not the close of research which will continue.

In my opinion Alexander left a lasting legacy to his family.  I do know that George Barclay, his brother and my great grandfather, along with Grace, his niece and my grandmother, held him in esteem.
