John Barclay had two families.  He was first married to Margaret. I have posted about the lives of the children of this first family which includes George and Alexander.

It is now time to share about the 2nd family of John Barclay.  He married Ellen (or Helen) about 1859.  I have featured John and Ellen in past posts on this blog.

Together John and Ellen had four children:  Charles, William, Mary E. and Anna Elizabeth. These individuals were also heirs of Alexander Barclay’s estate.  All of them were born in Minnesota in the area of Eagle Creek in Scott County.

I will revisit the census for John and Ellen Barclay’s family, so that you can see the family unit as it developed over time.

Charles Barclay first appears a 7/12 months old in the 1860 census, his two brothers are living with the family as well.  If the official date of enumeration was June 1, 1860, than Charles was probably born about November of 1859.  The 1900 U.S. Census has his birth date as January 1860?

Dwelling 838, Family 838, John Bartley, age 48 (born about 1812), male, farmer, born in Scotland. Ellen Bartley 30 (born about 1833), female, born in Norway. Charles Bartley 7/12 mos old, born in Minnesota, Alexander Bartley 20 years old (born about 1840), farm labor, born in Connecticut. George Bartley age 17 (born about 1843), farm laborer, born in Connecticut.

By 1865 George and Alexander are no longer listed in the census with their father and the family of John and Ellen Barclay consists of another son William:

Line 1, John Barkley, male. Helena Barkley, female. Charles, male. William, male. Mary, female. (No other information given.)

Charles Barclay is now 10 in the 1870 census and he has three more siblings:

The family is still in Eagle Creek in 1875:

In the 1880 U.S. Census we have everyone there except Mary.

Barclay, Ellen, white, female, age 48 (means she was born about 1832-33), wife, married, keeping house, born in Norway, parents born in Norway. Barclay, Charles, white, male, age 24 (means he was born about 1856), son, single, at home, born in Minnesota, father born in Scotland, mother in Norway. Barclay, William, white, male, age 17 (means he was born about 1863), son, single staying at home, born in Minnesota. By the 1885 Minnesota census only Charles and William remain at home.

There is no 1890 Federal census except for attempts to try to salvage it by offering other sources.  So we move forward to the 1895 Minnesota state census and find the family but only one child remains and that is Charlie.  We also see that John Barclay is getting very old.

On 25 December 1897, John Barclay passes away.  There is no estate file for John Barclay, I believe that years before he sold the land to his wife Ellen.  I have written about this in past posts as well as discussed deeds between Charles, William and Ellen. In August of 1898 Ellen sells land to her son Charles and in February of 1899 William sells his share back to Charles.

We find Ellen a widow in 1900 and son Charles is with her and listed as Head. I do not understand the one child born and one living.  The John Carter is part of her daughter Anna’s family.

For some reason in May of 1904 Charlie moves his possessions to Shakopee. “Charles Barclay has moved his household furniture into Shakopee, and will make that his future home. Charlie was always kind and obliging to everyone and we will all miss his happy smile very much.Scott County Argus, Friday, May 20, 1904.

Both Charles and Helen/Ellen were listed in the 1905 Minnesota State Census living in Shakopee.  She is 71 years old.

This may be why Charles moved to Shakopee, his mother Ellen was up in years and running a farm is hard business.  She passed in 1907.  I also believe that the 1850 date given for their marriage should read probably about 1858 but I have not been able to find the marriage record of John to Ellen. This obituary gives us clues as to where the other family members went.  The only one that remained was Charles.

Died – Barclay – At her home in this city, Saturday, November the 30th, Mrs. Helen Barclay of heart disease. Aged 73 years. Helen Stevenson was born in Norway in 1834, and came to this country in 1849, settling in Wisconsin, then Iowa, finally coming to Minnesota in 1848. She moved to Shakopee in 1850 with her husband, John Barclay, and was one of the early pioneer settlers of Shakopee. Mrs. Barclay leaves four children to mourn her loss. They are: Mrs. Mary Clark of Montana, Mrs. Anna E. Carter of Marynette, Wis.; and Charles at home, and William Barklay of Montana. The funeral was held from the residence, Tuesday, at two o’clock in the afternoon, Rev. Mr. Ganschow officiating. We extend our sincere sympathy to the bereaved children.

Source:  Shakopee Tribune, Scott Co., Minnesota, December 13, 1907, pg. 4 column 3.

Charles was the executor of his mother’s estate.  I have shared about Ellen’s probate in a past post.  So Charles was present in Shakopee in 1907 and into 1908.

From 1908 on I loose track of Charles Barclay. He did not marry during the time indicated above. Tracking a single man can be difficult.

What happened to Charles?  There is a possibility that he went to Hennepin/Ramsey County which is Minneapolis/St. Paul and lived there. A Charles Barclay is listed living with an Oscar and Minnie/Winnie Young/Yaung who are 36 and 28 years of age and have a son Earl who is 5 years old. Oscar is an Engineer. She is Norwegian so I am thinking he was living with one of his mother’s relatives? He is listed as 59 years old and his mother was born in Norway and father in Scotland. There is a death record of a Charles Barclay in Hennepin in 1938.  Could these be Charlie?  So a little more research is needed to find out where Charles Barclay ended up.

Martha M. Barclay Ford is a sister to Alexander Barclay and heir. She was listed as living in Fruitvale, California at the time of the probate of Alexander’s estate in 1906.

Martha married a Jeremiah Ford.  I do not know if he is related to Jerome Ford her sister Mary’s husband.

In the 1860 U.S. Federal Census, a Jeremiah F. Ford and Martha are living in Connecticut.  It is possible that Jarvis might be a brother?

They had migrated to California by 1870 and appear in the U.S. Federal census living in San Francisco, California.

According to my information Martha M. was born in 1843 not 1838?  This is very interesting for if this is true it changes the birth order of the Barclay siblings.

We find them in Brooklyn Twp., Alameda Co., California again in 1910:

I have been unable to locate Jeremiah and Martha in the 1920 census, nor have I found an obituary notice which means I have yet to find where they are buried.

I believe they had only Carrie but it was indicated that another child maybe have been born according to the 1900 census.

1.  Carrie Marine Ford was born 10 July 1865 in Farmington, Connecticut and may have died on 19 February 1943 in San Francisco.

I was unable to locate Carrie in the 1920 and 1930 census. I believe I found her in the 1940 living in the Old Peoples Home in San Francisco. She was 74 years old and born in Connecticut. The funeral records indicate that it will take a lot of digging to learn more about her life and the Bowhay and Gagos connections are interesting.

There are several Martha Fords listed in the California Death Index but one has the middle initial of M. So I think it is her. This Martha died 13 January 1916 in Santa Clara?  Jeremiah Ford her husband does not appear unless his first name is spelled differently.

Will of Mary J. Ford page 2

Will of Mary J. Ford page 2

The probate of Mary J. Barclay Ford was obtained at the Connecticut State Library.  I visited that library in 2011. It was my second time visiting that archive.

I had to order the estate file special and they had me come in and sit in the special collections area of the library.

Finding Mary’s will and probate file was very exciting.  It consisted of the following documents:

Will of Mary J. Ford, July 18, 1904, Bristol, Connecticut, Accepted 10, April, 1917, Vol. 42 pg. 410 , Attorney Epaphroditus Peck, Witnesses Frank L. Muzzy and James T. Mather, Jr. Witness Affidavit, July 18, 1904.

Affidavit Concerning the Payment of Taxes on Choses in Action and Other Property – $1750 for Real Estate and $500 for Machinery and $25.00 for one horse.

Application for Probate of Will, Filed in Court 3rd April, 1917 Rec. Vol. 39, Pg. 266. Died March 28, 1917, left a widower Jerome B. Ford and two daughters: Melissa M. Yale of Bristol and Annie B. Yale of Patchogue, LI, New York. Published in the Bristol Press as of 10 April, 1917.

Here is Mary’s will:

Will of Mary J. Ford: Know all men hereby, that I, Mrs. Mary Jane Ford, wife of Jerome B. Ford, of the town of Bristol, county of Hartford, and state of Connecticut, being now of sound and disposing mind and memory, do make and ordain this my last will and testament, in manner and form following:

1. I direct that all my just debts, funeral and probate expenses be paid, but moneys other than those in the Farmington Savings Bank shall be used for such payments, if there are sufficient such moneys.

2. I give, devise and bequeath to my husband, Jerome B. Ford, the shop, water-power and land, including about one half acre, lying easterly of the highway known as Jerome Avenue; and also all tools, machinery and stock contained in said shop, and all accounts of other property belonging to the business carried on in said shop. I also give and devise to my said husband the use, occupancy and income of my homestead, including the house in which we now live, and about fifteen acres of land on the westerly side of Jerome Avenue; and of the household goods in said house.

3. I give and bequeath to my daughter, Annie Barclay Yale, of Patchogue City, Long Island, wife of Henry A. Yale, all the money which may be left, at the time of my death, in the Farmington Savings Bank.

4. I give and bequeath to my daughter, Melissa M. Yale, of Bristol, wife of Frank E. Yale, any money, on hand or deposited in bank, except that in the Farmington Savings Bank, after payment of expenses and debts as above provided. And I also bequeath to said Melissa M. Yale, after the death of my said husband, the homestead, land and furniture, to be to her and to her heirs forever.

5. I hereby nominate and appoint said Melissa M. Yale to be executor hereof, without bonds. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set [my] hand and seal, at said Bristol, this eighteenth day of July, 1904. Signed Mary J. Ford (IL) Subscribed, sealed, and declared to be her last will and testament by Mrs. Mary J. Ford, in presence of us who, in her presence, and at her request, and in presence of each other, have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses. [Frank L. Muggy, James T. Mather Jr. Epaphrodius Peck].

This is a very interesting will in that she makes sure all the possessions and property are left to her husband Jerome.  I am also curious about what Melissa did with all the land before she left for California to be with her son?

This is what I know about Mary Jane Barclay Ford, sister and heir of Alexander Barclay.  Of course there is always more research to be done but it is time to move on.

At the Bristol Public Library there is a History room and I was able to find the cemetery where Mary and Jerome Ford were buried.  They are in the Forestville Cemetery.  They are featured on Find A Grave but I will share the pictures that I took that day when I visited this cemetery in 2011 on my trip to Connecticut.  I share my visit on my Massachusetts Meandering Blog, see right side panel of this blog for a link.

Here is what I wrote:

My very special goal was the Forestville Cemetery which was called the East Cemetery years ago.  I was warned it was a big cemetery and was a little worried as to how I would find them.

I was looking for Mary J. Barclay Ford and Jerome B. Ford and there three daughters.  I knew about Mary J. from the estate file of my great-uncle Alexander Barclay.  Mary and Alexander were siblings of my great-grandfather George A. Barclay.  I have been tracking her and it was exciting to know that I had an obituary for her and her husband.

The Forestville Cemetery is on Circle Street in Forestville.  I found it by going along W. Washington St. to Center and then to Circle.  It is a very well-kept cemetery and easy to get around on the paved roads which are numbered 1-4.  The information I had obtained from the History room in the Bristol Library gave me other names on tombstones to use to try to identify my family.  They have a cemetery book with listings done by rows although the rows are not identified you can tell by the page number approximately where the graves might be.  You could call the Forestville Cemetery Association.  Most cemetery jobs are part-time so you do have to be patient.  I didn’t do that but decided I could figure it out myself.

It took a while but I did find them, actually I found Frank Yale’s tombstone first and Melisa M. Ford but she didn’t have a death date? A Tilton was buried with them?

Frank E. Yale Dec 7, 1862 to Sept. 18, 1916
Melisa M. Ford Jan 19, 1871 to ?
Alvah L. Tilton Aug. 17, 1884 to Aug. 27, 1924

Jerome Ford and Mary J. Barclay Ford were buried over by the fence and right off road #3.  It was good to see the graves.  Next to them was their daughter Rozelia who died at 18 years old?  In Mary’s obituary grandchildren are mentioned.

Jerome B. Ford, Died July 5, 1817 Age 72 yrs.
Mary J. Barclay wife of Jerome B. Ford
Died Mar. 28, 1917 Age 75 yrs. 3 Mos.
Rozelia Daughter of Jerome B. & Mary J Ford
Died Feb 28, 1866 Age 18 yrs 8 mos.

We now know that Melisa died in El Cajon, San Diego Co., California where her son Alfred had gone to live.  I have not found her gravesite at this time. She migrated after 1930 and was there by 1940.

Frank E. Yale was Melisa’s first husband and father of her son Alfred.  The person named Alvah Tilton was Melisa’s 2nd husband who died in 1924. I cannot image how hard that must have been for her to lose two husbands within a decade.

On my tour of Massachusetts and Connecticut in 2011, I drove from Enfield, Connecticut north through to Longmeadow and east through Massachusetts visiting Brookfield. At Lancaster, I headed west to Warwick, then north to New Hampshire.  Once done with New Hampshire, I headed west to  Berkshire County.  After I finished up in Pittsfield, I headed south to Connecticut.  I drove through Litchfield and Thomaston. It was not to hard to head east to Bristol.  You can read about my travels on the blog: Massachusetts Meanderings.  Just put Bristol into the search box and it will bring up my visit to the area.

At the Bristol Public Library I found an obituary notice for Mary J. Barclay Ford.  I also found the cemetery information and the location of the burials.

I was hoping that one of the children of John and Margaret Barclay would tell me the maiden name of Margaret.  Well Mary J. Barclay Ford did have the name of her mother on her death certificate but it is very hard to read.

Mary Jane Barclay Ford, lived a good life in Bristol, Connecticut. She married Jerome B. Ford and settle there.  She was an heir to Alexander’s estate and fortunately she stayed in Connecticut. By staying in Connecticut Mary has made it easier to find her.

Jerome B. Ford, born 28 October 1845 in Unionville, Hartford Co., Connecticut was the son of Omri/Onri Ford and Catherine Kent. He married Mary Jane Barclay on 17 June 1866 in Unionville, Hartford, Connecticut.  I tried to get a copy from the City of Farmington but they do not have this marriage.  I do find a source at the Family History Library and I will have to follow-up.

Mary and Jerome had three daughters:

1. Rosalie Ford was born about 1867 and died in 28 February 1886 in Bristol.

Melissa and Frank had at least one child:

Alfred Jerome Yale who was born 25 October, 1895 in Connecticut and died 26 Dec. 1965 in San Diego, California. He is buried at Fort Rosecrans, Pt. Loma, San Diego, California. I have that he married Hannah Bertha Kessler born 20 June 1883 in Rochester, Lorain, Ohio but according to the obituary at his gravesite on Find A Grave he was married to an Eleanor and had a daughter.

3. Annie Barclay Ford was born about 1876 in Connecticut and she married Henry A. Yale born 1859 in Connecticut. They had 6 children: Elmer, Frank, Rozelia, Annie, Ida, and infant. All these children were born the end of the 1800’s.

Henry was also a son of Elmer and Lucy (Hart) Yale. Here is Henry and Anna’s marriage record.

So what happened to Melissa, well after Frank’s death in 1915, She remarried to an Alvah L. Tilton.  They were together in the 1920 census.

At this time I do not know what happened to Annie nor do I have the death dates and burial location for Henry and Annie Ford Yale.  She was a widow in 1917 during her mother’s probate. I cannot find her in the census and am having trouble even find her children.

I did find a military file for Charles E. Yale whom I believe is Henry and Annie’s oldest child and son. His middle name might be Elmer. He appears in the WWI Draft Cards:

Charles E. Yale, age 25, Address: Bay Av. Patchoque, NY, date of birth Feb. 25, 1893, natural born, born Bellport, NY, driver, C.St. Vroonamn?, Patchoque, NY,no dependents, Single, Caucasian, short, medium, eyes gray, dark brown hair. signed by R.A. Newton, Precint 19, Suffolk Co., NY.

In the next post I will share about the deaths of Mary J. Barclay Ford and Jerome Ford her husband.

NOTE:  If you do research in Connecticut join a genealogical society or you will have trouble in some courthouses and not allowed to see the records without this membership.  I had no problems till I went to the courthouse in Bristol.  So just be aware that their laws are strict regarding vital records.  It may not be the record that is the problem it is the index for some are beyond the privacy rules.

Sarah Agnes Barclay has also given me trouble.  I thought I had her in Connecticut married to a Porter Blinn but discovered, when I was in Connecticut in 2011, that it was a Sarah Grissom who married Porter Blinn. This is an example of checking other records like marriages and not just relying on census. The Sarah Agnes Barclay Blinn I wanted married a James Blinn.  As you read the information below you will see that Sarah is still giving me trouble.

In Salt Lake City, in October 2014, I found a birth record for an unnamed baby. The parents were Jas. B. Blinn and Sarah A. Barclay Blinn. The baby was born 29, June 1868 in Hartford, Hartford Co., Connecticut. FHL#1313829.

Birth Record child of Sarah and James.

The 1880 Connecticut Census has a James with a Sarah A. which might be them but the ages do not match the birth record above?

Source: James Blinn Family, Hartford, Hartford Co., Connecticut, page 3, SD#2, ED#4, enumerated 1 of June 1880, by J. McConville.

Sarah Agnes Blinn witnesses a deed between Grace and Amarilla in 1899 in August.  I have featured this deed in a previous post on this blog regarding George A. Barclay’s estate.  See the post dated March 24, 2014 titled: “Final Decree Aug. 15, 1899 – George’s Legacy.”  I am glad Grace got to meet more of her father’s siblings.  I think of all the lost stores of this family, sigh!

In the 1900 Census we find Sarah with a daughter in California.

Line 84, 426, 55, 103, Blinn/Blum, Sarah, Head, W, F, June 1834, 65 Wd, 2 children born, 2 died. Born in Scotland, Immigrated 1851, 49 years in U.S., no occupation.

If this is Sarah Agnes Barclay Blinn then I find her birth date very interesting and the fact she immigrated in 1851 also very interesting.  Her daughter Louise is very confusing with the age 46 and the birth 1853?

In 1920 Sarah is living in an insane asylum and probably has suffered the same fate as Alexander who was found wandering Farmington before his death and ended up in the Rochester Hospital in Olmsted Co., Minnesota.  It is very interesting that her parents are born in New York?

The information provided below may or may not be the correct family, there is a tombstone at Find A Grave in the Sunset View Cemetery in Contra Costa, California, for a Sarah A. Blinn with the appropriate dates. She is listed as the Mother of Leola M. Kellogg but I don’t know or can find a Leola Kellogg marriage record: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Blinn&GSfn=Sarah&GSbyrel=all&GSdyrel=all&GSob=n&GRid=137683492&df=all&

Daughter Leola Mae may have married first an Alexander Buck and lived in Contra Costa but based on the above, I am not sure.

Sarah J. Buck was born 4 January 1922 in Placer and her mother’s maiden name was Blinn.

1940 we find Alexander with a May in Placer.

Line 41, 141, O, 200, No, Buck, Alexander E. Head, M, W, 55, M, No, 8, born PA, Same house, Farmer. Buck, May, Wife, F, W, 56, M, No, 8, born PA, County Clinton, State PA, no occupation.

Source: Alexander Buck Family, Placer County, California, Judicial 10, SD#2, ED#31-21, Sht 7, enumerated on 22 April, 1940, by Eldon R. Martinson.

It looks like Alexander Buck died on 20 November 1970 in Placer, California and was born 21 December 1884 per the California Death Index.

I find that the Barclay’s were very inconsistent with their census information.  I am using census again without other documents like vital records to verify, so the information above is all very uncertain till I get time to dig more.

There is certainly more to do with Sarah Agnes and her family like finding her marriage record and when did James pass. How many children did she actually have?  Did I find the correct Sarah in the census or am mistaken.  I need to look at vital records and more to see if I cannot get a clearer picture of Sarah Agnes Barclay Blinn.
