Emily Jane Allgood Gilchrist 1857 to 1925 and her family…

Emily Jane Allgood Gilchrist was a daughter of Sarah Blacketer Allgood Spracklin. She is not related to me but was related to the second family of Daniel’s because of Sarah.  I don’t think that Amarilla and Emily were close but I share this here because it is information I have about a connection to the Spracklins.

Emily was born on 6 May, 1857 in Rose Hill, Mahaska Co., Iowa to Charles Edward Allgood and Sarah Jane Blacketer. The family believes Emily was born in Iowa but the census says Indiana.

The family appears in the 1860 U.S. Census.

Emily was the only surviving child from this family, as far as I can tell, John, James, and Phoebe died very young. Her father Edward Allgood has been difficult to research. I have their marriage and the 1860 census but that is about it. Sarah Blacketer married Edward Allgood on 25 December, 1852 in Rockeville, Parke Co., Indiana and they migrated to Iowa.

Emily married William H. Gilchrist on 28 October, 1875 in Marengo, Iowa Co., Iowa. William was born 11 November, 1853 in Mahaska Co., Iowa and died 29 October, 1937.  Emily died 29 October, 1925 and both are buried in the Jackson Cemetery in Rose Hill, Iowa. Find a Grave has memorials for them and pictures of their tombstone.

We find Emily and William in Mahaska Co., Iowa.  They are there in the 1900 census with six of their eleven (11) children:

I could not find Emily and William in the 1920 U.S. Federal Census but I did find several of their children. Which I will present below in the overview of their family.

William and Emily are in the 1925 Iowa State Census living in Monroe, Mahaska Co., Iowa. This is the last census for Emily.  It has been very difficult to find William and Emily in the census for both federal and state.

William appears in the 1930 census widowed and with his son Louis.

William and Emily had probably eleven (11) children of which four (4) died young:

1. Ivy Esther Gilchrist b. 12 February, 1877 in Rose Hill, Mashaska Co., Iowa and died 16 October, 1964.  She married to a John Douglass born about 1875 in Iowa.

John and Ivy were living in Nebraska in 1920. A complete census study would be in order but here is at least a start.

6. Leslie Earl Gilchrist was born 8 December, 1884 in Mahaska Co., Iowa and died 9 July 1973.  He married to a Abbie M. Baughman born about 1892 in Iowa to Francis M. Baughman and Marthe M. Payton.

7. Birdie Anna Gilchrist was born 1 April, 1887 in Mahaska Co., and died 11 April, 1909 is buried in the Jackson Cemetery in Rose Hill. Find A Grave has a memorial with a tombstone photo. She married a Henry Gustavus Hedlund who was born 17 August, 1888 in Rose Hill, Mahaska Co., Iowa and died August 1979 in Oskaloosa, Mahaska Co., Iowa. He is buried in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Find A Grave has a memorial with a tombstone photo and links. He was the son of Andrew Hedlund and Christina Lausen.

Henry remarried to a Nell O. Wesby on 4 January, 1912 in Mahaska Co., Iowa. If I could find a marriage for Henry to Birdie I would feel better about this section. Here is the marriage for Henry to Nell.

8. Sarah Emma Gilchrist was born 28 May, 1889 in Mahaska Co., Iowa and she died 22 February, 1978. She married on 13 November 1913 in Dickinson Co., Iowa to a Clayton Davis born about 1884. The name Sodie Emma was used in the marriage record.

9. Edna Wildia Rill Gilchrist was born 11 July, 1891 in Rose Hill. She married a Walter Everhart Lenox on 14 April, 1915 in Emmet, Iowa. Walter died in 1950 and is buried in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa, Mahaska Co., Iowa. Edna died in 1990 and is buried in the Forest Cemetery as well. Their son Cloyd V. Lenox was born 6 March, 1916 in Iowa and died 15 July, 1983 in Oskaloosa and he is also buried in the Forest Cemetery. Find A Grave has a memorial for him.  He married on 2 January, 1943 to a Bonnie M. Daniels born 28 April 1917.  They had a daughter names Linda who died and is buried in the Forest Cemetery with a memorial at Find A Grave and links to her husband.

10. George Iris Gilchrist was born 9 April, 1893 in Rose Hill. He married a Bessie Bell Goodge on 15 April, 1914, Emmet, Iowa. Bessie was born about 1896 to Sherman Goodge and Carline Slaight. They may have had: Alvin, Dale W, Clifford, Nellie Mae and Delmer. George died about 1990 in Solway, Beltrami Co., Minnesota and is buried in the Solway Cemetery there. Bessie died 1985 and is also buried in the Solway Cemetery. Find A Grave has a memorial for them.

In 1920 George and Bessie were living in Keokuk Co., Iowa. His brother Louis is with him.

George and Bessie attended the funeral of Charles Edward Spracklin in 1946, there are mentioned in the obituary for George’s uncle.

11. Louis Eugene Gilchrist was born 18 March, 1897 in What Cheer, Keokuk Co., Iowa and he died 1 December, 1982. He never married. In 1920 he is with his brother George and in 1930 he is living with his widowed father in Rose Hill, Mahaska Co., Iowa. He was also at the funeral of his uncle Charles Edward Spracklin in 1946 in Pine River.

So much more could be done on this family but I think this is where I will stop. It might be very interesting to seek out an estate file for William Gilchrist in October of 1937 in Mahaska County, Iowa to see if the children are listed and any other descendants.  Other documents like obituaries, more census work and final resting places could be sought.

Daniel D. Spracklin and Sarah’s Children – A Summary

I have come to the end of my research on Daniel D. Spracklin, Elizabeth Keller his first wife and Sarah Blacketer Allgood his second wife.  I have also presented posts about his children, his migration from Ohio to Iowa, his estate and his lands. Daniel and Elizabeth are my 2nd great parents.  Of course, research is never done, I could do more on Daniel’s life like study the deeds, court records and more and dig more into the lives of his childred.  I am fairly content at this time.

Let me review Daniel’s two families:

First marriage to Elizabeth Keller in December 1852 in Morrow Co., Ohio.

1. Henry Franklin Spracklin 1853 to 1893, resided in Davenport, Iowa.
2. Olive Solomon Spracklin – 1854 to 1855 buried with his mother in Titler Cemetery near Marengo, Iowa.
3. Mary Ellen Spracklin 1856 to 1861 buried with her brother and mother in Titler Cemetery.
4. Amarilla Grace Spracklin 1858 to 1942 – Iowa to Minnesota. My great grandmother.

Second marriage to Sarah Blacketer Allgood in 1863 in Iowa:

1. Lydia Marie Spracklin Ross 1864 to 1931 – Stayed mostly in Iowa.
2. Virda Huston Spracklin 1866 to 1927 – Migrated from Iowa to South Dakota.
3. Reed Andrews Spracklin 1868 to 1938 – Migrated from Iowa to Montana
4. Daniel Goss Spracklin – 1870 to 1927 – Iowa to Oklahoma and back to Iowa.
5. Peter George Spracklin – 1872 to 1957 – Iowa to Nebraska and other parts of the country and then finally settling in Reading, Pennsylvania.
6. Charles Edward Spracklin – 1874 to 1946 – Iowa to Minnesota.
7. Alfred Marion Spracklin – 1876 to 1893 – He stayed in Iowa with his parents.

There is a cousin who does not agree with the labeling of the above photograph, she thinks that Daniel on the far right and Reed on the far left are switched because Daniel was a big man? I believe that it is correct. You can go and looked at the posts I have written on each of these individuals on this blog and study the photographs yourself. I think that Reed must have grown a mustache later on. I wanted to share these comments because it doesn’t hurt to question things.  Have fun and let me know what you think.

It is time to return to Amarilla and find out what happened to her after her father Daniel’s death.  When Daniel died Amarilla was known as Amarilla Dawes and she was on her own.  She would live another 27 years.

The Death of Sarah, Amarilla’s Step-mother – 1907!

Amarilla’s father Daniel Spracklin had remarried after the death of his first wife Elizabeth Keller. Elizabeth was Amarilla’s mother. He married Sarah Blacketeer Allgood a widow in 1863.

Amarilla and Sarah didn’t get along according to family stories, the particulars of their relationship are not clear.  By 1875 or 1876 Amarilla left home and headed to Minnesota. Amarilla would meet and marry George A. Barclay in 1878 and reside in Pine River till her death.  I have shared about their lives together in past posts on this blog.

It is unclear as to how the death of her step-mother affected Amarilla. Sarah died 22 August, 1907 in Dayton Twp., Iowa Co., Iowa. Her tombstone is on Find A Grave and she shares it with Daniel.

“Obituary for Sarah Spracklin
Mrs. Sarah Spracklin was born Sept. 28, 1836, in Park County, Indiana and died at her home near Deep River, IA, April 22, 1907. She had been a citizen of the neighborhood for over thirty years. She had been in poor health since last October and was a patient sufferer. In her early life she united with the M.E. Church and had ever been a faithful member. Funeral services were held at the Deep River M.E. church Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Keopple of Millersburg. A large concourse of friends were present to pay a last tribute of respect. The children of the Bunker Hill school were present in a body at the home Thursday morning to pay respects to their dear old friend. By her kindly acts and comforting words she had endeared herself to every child and young person in the neighborhood. She was a loving wife and devoted mother. Those left to mourn their loss are an aged widower and seven children together with grand children and other relatives and friends. The children are Verd, of Dakota; Mrs. Gilchrist and Dan and Ed, of What Cheer; George and Reed, of this vicinity. The procession of teams that went from the home to the church from the neighborhood was represented. Internment was in the U.B. Cemetery (Community Cemetery 5-7 miles west of Millersburg).”

Finding this obituary of Sarah Spracklin was a challenge. As you can see Daniel and Sarah lived very close to Deep River which is in Poweshiek County, Iowa and not Iowa County, Iowa, where they actually resided on their land in Dayton Twp. The obituaries of both Daniel and Sara Spracklin were found in the Deep River newspaper. Daniel’s will be shared in a future post.

In review, Amarilla had three full siblings from the first marriage of Daniel’s.  Amarilla and Henry survived to adulthood in this family till he was killed in 1892.  Add the seven half-siblings from the 2nd marriage, minus the youngest who died.

There was more.  Her step-mother Sarah Blacketer  was married before she married Daniel D. Spracklin  in 1863 in Iowa.  Her first husband was Charles Edward Allgood.

Charles or perhaps he was referred to as Edward, was born on 9 June 1829 in Kentucky and it looks like he died sometime around March of 1861? I have not been able to verify it.  I did locate Sarah and Edward in the 1860 census for Iowa.  They were living in Mahaska County, Iowa.

I descend from the Elizabeth (Keller) Spracklin and Daniel D. Spracklin line.  The first family.  So I really have not taken the time to study Sarah and her family origins.  There are several living descendants of Sarah and Daniel, cousins, that know a lot more and have more on this side of the family.

What little I do know is that Sarah’s parents were James Houston Blacketer and Phoebe?

James was born on 6 April 1801 in Virginia and died 16 May 1852 while Phoebe lived from 1801 to 1861.  He married Phoebe on 3 January 1824 in Mercer Co., Kentucky.  James may have married three times to Susanna Hamilton,  Sarah Hammer and Phoebe Romaine/Romine?  Please verify this information for I am not real comfortable with it.   I am questioning the Sarah Hammer part?

I did meet a fellow researcher at the Iowa County Genealogical Society when I was in Marengo, Iowa several years back in 2003 and unfortunately I do not remember her name I was overwhelmed that day.  She was more up on the Blacketers/Blacketeers/Blackaters than I was.  It might be worth it to check with this society and see what they have in their surname files, pioneer files and obituaries and more on this family.  I was there in 2003 and my focus was the Spracklins.  They have moved their office and library from the Marengo Public Library. There is a link on the right side of this blog to this county genealogical society.  Do not confuse it with the state society which is in Des Moines and titled the Iowa Genealogical Society.

Edward and Sarah married on 25 December 1852 in Rockville, Parke Co., Indiana.

They had 4 maybe 5 children of which only one survived.

1.  John G. Allgood 27 March 1854 to 25 September 1855.

2.  James H. Allgood 3 Mar 1856 to 13 Mar 1856

3.  Emily Jane Allgood born 3 May 1857 in Rosehill, Mahaska Co., Iowa and died 29 October 1925 in Mahaska Co., Iowa.  She married a William M. Gilchrist 28 October 1875 in Marengo, Iowa Co., Iowa and they had 11 children.  Emily was at the funeral of her mother in 1907.  Daniel had to give his approval of Emily’s marriage.  If you see the Gilchrist name it is probably Emily.  More on this family in a later post.   Emily and William had (11) eleven children that I know of.

4.  Phoebe Delilah Allgood was born 18 Jan 1860 and died March 1861.

There might be a possibility of another child:  There is a baby buried in the Titler Cemetery, northwest of Marengo, Iowa.  The tombstone reads:  Daug. of E & S. Allgood, Died May 18, 1862, aged 2 yrs. 4 mos.

Charles Edward Allgood has been difficult to trace.  I checked the Iowa WPA Burials and there a many Allgoods in Mahaska County but I did not have enough detail to make a connection, so I do not know who Edward’s parents.  I cannot find probate/estate files in Mahaska Co. in that county.   I did find a James Algood Estate, John H. Allgood Estate and a John E. Allgood estate in the indexes for Mahaska Co., Iowa – Source Probate Records 1844-1899, Indexes 1851-1964, FHL# Probate Indexes #976783, Guardians #976791, Administrators Index 1856-1867 #975994 and Probate Records V. C-D 1860-1865 FHL#976787.  I did not make copies, these are what was in the index only.  No Charles or Edward only was appearing.

My theory is he is buried with other Allgoods in Titler cemetery north of Marengo?  Some illness was sweeping the country in the early 1860’s and Canada, lots of people lost.  Somehow Sarah had to get from Mahaska Co. to Benton Co. by 1863 to marry Daniel.  So if the baby in the Titler is their child and it died in 1862 maybe Edward is there in Titler without a stone?

Titler’s cemetery’s records are not in good shape except for the two publications and my photographs of the cemetery tombstones. (See BJM’s Cemetery Discovery link above.) I was informed that there was no platte map found to help identify all those buried there.  A Henry Blacketer is in the 1856 Iowa census living near Daniel and Elizabeth Spracklin in Benton County, Iowa.

I may or may not have this right but I have the following children for Sarah’s siblings it is looking like these might be all Phoebe’s children based on the marriage record I mentioned above and the Blacketer family history PDF link below:

8. 1/2 brother (mother Susanna Hamilton?) Henry Baily Blacketer b. 18 Oct 1821 died about Oct. 1866 in Benton Co., Iowa and married a Mary who was born about 1822 in Tennesee.  They had Jarvis James R. Blacketer b. abt. 1842 in Iowa,  Thomas I. Blacketer b. abt. 1844 Iowa and Sarah I. Blacketer b. abt. 1853 in Iowa.

I mentioned the 1856 Iowa State Census and that there were Blacketers near Daniel.  Who is this Henry Blackater?  An older sibling or some other connection to this family like the 8th child listed above?

Susan Woods 14 yrs old living with them and in Iowa 7 yrs., born in Ohio.

Another source is the Ancestor Outline done by Arminda Spracklin, wife of Charles Edward Spracklin, 1/2 sibling to Amarilla. This was given to me by my Aunt Miriam McDonald, sister to my father Keith.

Daniel & Sarah’s Children

Based on other photos I think that the update is correct (11/2014).  I think they look cold.  I would say this was taken about 1908 or maybe 1915???

Daniel and Sarah’s Children:

1.  Lydia Marie Spracklin was born 12 July 1864, Benton County, Iowa and died the 27th of May 1930 in Somers, Calhoun Co., Iowa.  She married Thomas Jefferson Ross on 9 Sept. 1881 in Dayton Twp., Iowa Co., Iowa.  They are both buried in the Cedar Cemetery, Rinard, Calhoun County, Iowa.

2.  Virda Huston Spracklin was born 11 June 1866 in Benton County, Iowa and died 15 November 1927 in Woonsocket, Sanborn County, South Dakota.  He married Lillie Mae Amsden on 12 November 1889 in Rockwell City, Calhoun Co., Iowa.  They ar both buried in the Eventide Cemetery in Woonsocket.  I was very excited to see that FindAGrave has a picture of Virda’s tombstone.  I have tried to figure out how I could visit.

3.  Reed Andrews Spracklin born 24 August 1868, Benton Co., Iowa and died 18 July 1938 in Jordan, Garfield Co., Montana.  He married Julia Ann Siler on the 29th of December 1897 in Greenfield Twp., Calhoun Co., Iowa.  They are buried in the Pioneer Cemetery in Jordan, Montana.  Reed was the administrator of his father’s estate.  I have visited his granddaughter Bertha Spracklin Roufley on several occasions and learned a great deal about Reed.

4.  Daniel Goss Spracklin was born 21 Sept. 1870 in Benton Co., Iowa and died the 8th of August 1927 in Calhoun Co., Iowa.  He married a Susan Matilda Marrow on the 29th of January 1907 in Iowa Co., Iowa.  I do not yet know where Daniel is buried.

5.  Peter George Spracklin was born the 31st of August 1872 probably Iowa Co.  His father Daniel had moved the family from Benton Co. to Iowa County and 20 miles south and it was about this time that he made that move.  Peter died on the 26th of January 1956 in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania.  He married Etta Mae Hall on 1 January 1896 in Calhoun Co., Iowa but that marriage didn’t last.  Peter has descendants in Pennsylvania and West Virginia and I have had the great fortune to meet them while traveling in Ohio in 2011.

6.  Charles Edward Spracklin was born the 19th of September 1874 probably in Iowa County.  He died on the 10th of September  1946, Deerfield Township, Cass County, Minnesota and is buried in the Bethlehem Cemetery, McKinley Township, Cass County, Minnesota.  He married Arminda Victoria Ward sometime in 1915 in Pine River, Cass County, Minnesota.  I have been to the graveside of both Charles and Arminda.

7.  Alfred Marion Spracklin was born 16 July 1876 in Iowa County, Iowa and died Dec. 12 1893 in Iowa County.  He is buried with his parents in the Community Cemeter east of Millersburg.  There is some confusion in the published cemetery records of his exact birth date.  Some say it was 1899 but I believe it was 1893.  More on Alfred in a future post.

Each one of the children of Daniel and Sarah and has a great story to tell.  One of my biggest problems in tracking the descendants of Daniel and Sarah was that most left and lived in other parts of Iowa or headed for the Dakotas, Minnesota, Oregon, California even some went back to Pennsylvania.  By the time of Daniel’s death  in 1915 they had scattered.  Spracklins are a restless bunch and they don’t like to leave records unless you are willing to dig for them.

I pause to give a great deal of credit to my whole and half cousins who have helped me to learn more about each one of these families, the first and the second of Daniel’s.  I am grateful for their passion and willingness to share.   Of course my interest tends to lean toward the first family so forgive me if I error or fail to present all information.

She gave me permission to share.  Her Aunt Bertha helped to clarify and confirm correctly, who the persons in the photograph were.  Reed was her grandfather.

Stepping Back In Time: Amarilla’s Life In Iowa Before George!

In recent published posts I have talked about John Keller and Mary Anne Delano Keller who were Amarilla’s grandparents on her mother’s side.

Amarilla was the daughter of Daniel D. Spracklin and Elizabeth Keller.  Daniel’s parents were John Andrews Spracklin and Lydia Goss.  Daniel and Elizabeth had 4 children.  By 1860 Elizabeth had passed.  She had died in 1859 just months after Amarilla’s birth.

A thorough page by page search of the Iowa census was attempted but Daniel was not found.  Amarilla does appear in the 1860 Iowa census in Benton County, Iowa but she is not with her father Daniel? She is with her sister Mary and another family.

It is my belief that this is Mary and Amarilla even though the spelling is different.  The ages are correct and the location is close.  As for the Shelley family, I do not know what their relationship to Daniel maybe.  The Spracklins and the Kellers are large families and this could easily be relatives that I do not have knowledge of.  They could also just be neighbors and friends helping out.

The other interesting fact is that Henry, the older brother is also displaced and living with another family in 1860.  In this case it is his Aunt Olive a sister of Daniel’s.

There is no sign of Amarilla’s father.  I did a house by house search of the township and there were lots of houses that were empty.  I even searched in Ohio to see if Daniel had gone back to his home in Knox County, Ohio because his father John Andrews Spracklin had died in 1862.  I cannot find him.

So the death of Elizabeth Keller Spracklin in 1859 really created a temporary scattering of the family of Daniel D. Spracklin at that time.  There does not appear to be any evidence that he joined the fight and enlisted in the Civil War.

By 1870 Daniel is back in the census and he is remarried to Sarah.  He has Henry and Amarilla with him from his first marriage.  Emily is Sarah’s daughter from her first marriage. Sister Mary died on the 27th of September 1861.  This death must have affected Amarilla even though she was very young.

By 1870, Sarah and Daniel have started to have a family of their own.  The other children: Lydia, Birdie H (Virda), Reed A. are of the 2nd family.

There are other names listed under the notation for Daniel in 1870.  Nelson, Peter 26, farmer with 600 value of personal estate from Denmark, Nelson, Hardie 26 keeping house, from Denmark, Nelson, Andrew 1 yr. born in Iowa, Nelson, Peter 5/12 yr. born in Iowa, all have parentage that are foreign birth, Frederickson, Ann 8, from Denmark, Anderson, Peter 23, laborer Denmark, both with parentage foreign.

Daniel remarried on 21 November 1863 to Sarah Blacketer Allgood in Marengo, Iowa Co., Iowa.  He is still living in LeRoy Twp. in Benton County, Iowa but that will change.  Amarilla was 5 years old when he marries Sarah.  She may be young but old enough to know that something has happened.

In the closeup of the Benton Co. Atlas Daniel’s land is in two parts of 40 acres each.  There is a double line almost in the middle and Daniel’s land is on the left of the line under the School.  There is a dot showing this piece of land.  The other land is to the right on the other side of the double line with another dot next to a Case and below A. Justus.  Which piece of land Daniel had his house located on is not known.  This is why Amarilla’s great-granddaughter, the writer of this blog, believes she was born nearer to Blairstown.  Daniel did not move to Iowa County, Iowa 20 miles south till after 1872.  Amarilla was born in November of 1858.

If you go back to the 1856 Iowa State Census you will find interesting things going on.   Daniel is not mentioned in published indexes for this census but he is definitely there and he and Elizabeth and their son Henry are living next to Blacketers, and Daniel’s sister Olive Merrifield and her family.

So Amarilla’s beginnings are a bit precarious.  She looses her mother at a very early age, a sister dies and she is separated from her brother and father for maybe a year or two?  Then her father returns to marry a stranger.  This is a lot for a 5-year-old to take in.
